Useful tips for anyone with a website

Get into Bed with Google is a collection of 52 tips and techniques to help website owners improve their site's performance on Google and other search engines. The author has an excellent pedigree, having been involved with Amazon's UK start-up team and a number of other high-profile websites. It's a great introduction to some of the topics involved in SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and never strays into heavy technical territory.

The tips themselves cover a broad spectrum, in terms of the amount of time they will take to research or implement, and the nature of the tasks involved. For example reviewing the heading structure on your website is probably a short job for most people, and making the necessary adjustments another reasonably manageable task. On the other hand, creating seven satellite websites, on seven different domains, with seven different sets of content, is a significant piece of work for even the most organised webhead.

This is no bad thing though. There's plenty in here you use to fill a few spare minutes, like researching your competition, keywords and the filenames used for your images, and plenty more that should play a big part in a longer-term strategy for improving search engine performance.

There are times when the author makes statements as if they were fact, with little to back himself up. For example he claims the three-click rule is still absolute in e-commerce, while recent studies have shown that so long as the user of an e-commerce site is clearly and steadily being helped towards their goal, the three-click is not relevant. It would also have been nice to have more examples of the author's experience - the occasional mention of his online toyshop aside, there's not an tremendous amount of real-world illustration.

If you've got a website and are interested in getting more visitors to it (who isn't?) this is the perfect introduction, and even if you've got a little bit of knowledge there'll be plenty here that's new to you.
