Rachel and her friends are at Down Town's eating pizza when Gary walked in. He's the town's star athlete, but he's from a rival school. It's taboo to form friendships much less date guys from there. So he's considered off limits to Rachel.

Going against tradition, she went out with Gary. Their summer long romance was kept secret from friends. Shortly before school was to start back, they took the relationship to a physical level which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy.

Attempts to contact Gary failed and Rachel ends up at an abortion clinic. Feeling alone, she turns to God for guidance. Waiting in the room, she is given a vision of what could happen if she were to choose a different path.

At six his family moved to Kingston, New York which introduced him to deep snow and sledding along with his two older sisters and younger brother.
