Shades of Jane Austen
First off, I must give Mr. Morgan a standing ovation for writing this book almost entirely as it would have been written in the early 19th century. The words, phrasing, and even plot seems to have come straight from one of the great writers of that period. Caroline Fortune is a young woman who comes from a poor family, and is forced to take employment as a lady's companion to a very unpleasant old woman. When her father dies, she is forbidden to go to the funeral. Defying orders, Caroline resolves to attend the services anyway and finds her employment terminated. Along the way, she encounters a potential husband in a charming young man (who turns out to be a scoundrel) and a very unconventional but even more charming young man who is looking for something that's missing from his life. A dilemma also arises when her close friend becomes engaged to the scoundrel...should she tell her the truth or not? Overall, a highly enjoyable read and easily the best book I've read in a long time. Should Masterpiece Theatre do an adaptation, I can easily picture David Tennant ("Dr. Who") as the unlikely hero, Stephen Milner. Morgan has another book forthcoming, entitled "An Accomplished Woman"--I expect it will be just as good.
