Poetic

Poetic is the word that comes to mind when I think about how to describe this book. Perhaps that's not the right word to use, but for me it fits. I read No Country for Old Men recently, which I also enjoyed, so I thought I would read this, too. I enjoyed this book even more. Stories about the future have always fascinated me, particularly ones that take place post-holocaust. It's just a fascinating thing (horrifying, too, of course) to consider what it would really be like. We have some idea, but certainly we don't know for sure. In The Road, McCarthy writes a story that, although it takes place post-holocaust, is really about relationships, humanity, and survival. However, I found the writing enabled me to visualize what that world would look like in a very real way. What really drew me in, though, was the relationship between the man and boy, "father" and "son". All his effort, everything he has, he puts forth for the boy. What's so amazing about McCarthy's writing is that he's able to convey those emotions in such a simple way. Much of the book is in dialogue between the two, and it's very simple dialogue. But in its way, it's very real and moving. I would truly recommend this book for the story, for its writing, and for the experience.
