Well-written WWII thriller, following a group of civilians and soldiers in Cairo in 1942 as the British retreat and the Germans look like they're going to take North Africa completely. Takes a while to get going - not quite as engaging as other WWII books by Deighton (Bomber is a personal favourite.)

Alternately incomprehensible and brilliant. A very self-referential book, but I haven't read the other Iain Sinclair books that he refers too. The writing is brilliant, but at times frustrating too.
