Excellent popular science book, covering everything from the Big Bang to bacteria and all points in between. Very easy reading despite sometimes covering some complex subjects. Bryson keeps it all at a nice level, dropping in interesting anecdotes about scientific discoveries.

First read this as a teenager, and loved it then. Got a free copy with the Independent a few weeks back, so re-read it. The language didn't seem as impenetrable as first time round, and there was a glossary available (although I never referred to it). Excellently written and told, Burgess' use of Russian language migrated into English slang is inspired.
