Groups / Genres / Is ChickLit A Dirty Word? / ChickLit For Beginners

I thought I'd add a primer for those not familiar with this particular genre.

For an overall introduction to Chick Lit, check out this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chick_lit.

From the article:
"Chick lit features hip, stylish female protagonists, usually in their twenties and thirties, in urban settings (usually London or Manhattan), and follows their love lives and struggles in business (often in the publishing, advertising, public relations or fashion industry)."

Some of the major ChickLit authors (and some of my favorites) are Jennifer Weiner ("In Her Shoes", "Good In Bed", etc.), Sophie Kinsella (the Shopaholic series), Jennifer Green ("Jemima J", etc.) and, the one most often credited for starting in all, Helen Fielding (the Bridget Jones series).

I'd suggest any of the above authors to those looking to dabble in ChickLit. Anyone else have suggestions?

Good intro. Oddly enough, though I work in a Library I was sitting her trying to decide for myself what ChickLit might be. Now I can see I didn't know because I don't read it. While I loved the first Bridget Jones movie, I wasn't able to read the book. Although I may try again sometime.

I've read a couple of books that fit into this category, and while I found them a fun read, I cannot say I really like the genre. (or is it a sub-genre?). To me they are beach books, or books that you read in between books of more substance, for a break.

Would Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series be considered ChickLit? What about Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series?

BookSmuggler says:

I wouldn't think Janet Evanovich or Jasper Fforde are considered ChickLit by definition. You could definitely make a case for Stephanie Plum as a ChickLit character, but her shenanigans are not those of the ChickLit world.

I actually love the Thursday Next series! But no, I wouldn't consider it ChickLit.

Some of my favourite ChickLit Authors:
Anna Maxted
Jane Green
Jennifer Weiner
Marian Keyes
Josie Lloyd & Emlyn Rees
Lisa Jewell
Jennie Colgan

I have read many of Weiner's books and LOVED them. Of course, Fielding is fantastic. I would think that perhaps Devil Wears Prada is moderately chic-lit-ish, don't you think? Glad to see some new authors I did not know about above- am happy to join this fun group!
