Since Manolo's admitted to being a middle-aged Celt, I guess I shall fesh up to being a LATE middle-aged American female; a New Yorker like Jaemie, I live in Manhattan. I spent at least one lifetime studying philosophy and applied linguistics, with a speciality in Black English (before it was called Ebonics). In the next life, I taught writing and literature (including detective fiction) at a branch of the City University of NY, ending up as their director of distance learning before I threw it all over for a life of retirement which includes consulting on classroom technology at an independent religious school, writing short narratives for a web 'zine, and working on my first novel. As my grandmother used to say, "oy," which my students pointed out is merely "yo" backwards. I read mostly current fiction (except when I feel drawn to go back to Dickens), am drawn to American "ethnic" writers, and lately read first novels and pray mine will read like some of the ones I come across.

That's a lot of lifetimes! And they all sound very cool. Good luck with your book! You certainly seem to have plenty to draw on.

Hi Marka. Sounds like a great set of lives you've had. Are you a fellow cat by any chance?
Good luck with your first book... hope you'll soon be reading second novels for the same reason.
Do you ever feel that a writer's first novel is their best shot, and the later ones a bit disappointing? I can think of a few I've felt that of, and often wondered whether it's like the traditional "difficult second album" of rock music...
