I don't really imagine that anyone could remember the exact dates that long ago - in fact, I can't remember the exact date that I read the last book I finished.

So this is two requests:
- allow, at least, a date of "before 1987"
- let dates be approximate: by letting day and month be optional, say.

Wooly dates are certainly do-able, although there is quite a lot of work behind the scenes to accommodate them. At the moment we use a single date field, which obviously requires a day, month and year - to allow something more amorphous will need additional fields, and additional functions to ensure ordering is handled correctly.

As a compromise how about a tick box next to dates labelled "approximately"? If it's checked the date is presented as month & year, if it's not checked it's presented as the full date?
