Groups / Revish / Feature requests / add books from LT

cornerhouse says:

I'd very much like to add books directly from my own LibraryThing catalog instead of having to search Amazon for a book that I already own.

Is this possible given that the LT folks aren't allowing you to use thingISBN?

danchamp says:

Given LT's attitude to our use of thingISBN it's very unlikely we'll be able to put in place any direct link between the two sites for this purpose. If LT lets you export your record for an individual work one possibility is to provide an import in the appropriate format.

This probably wouldn't be much less hassle than searching Amazon, but I appreciate the problems you're seeing with that approach too.

The other possibility is screen-scraping, and the provision of a bookmarklet, but that's not a road I'd like to go down.

Feel free to lobby Tim to open up their data via an API though. :-)

cornerhouse says:

That's pretty much what I figured. None of the existing possibilities are very attractive.

I think the best avenue at this point is to lobby Tim -- though given the recent directions that the LT business model has taken (the collective data being one area from which they're looking to profit), I don't see it as very likely.
